FLOATATION THERAPY! You’ve probably heard all the hype, but what do you need to know to really get the most out of your first float? When I first started floating I was pretty nervous and I got off to an awkward start, looking back I wish I had somebody explain what I’m about to explain to you! It would have made a world of difference. I’m by no means a Zen Master, but I do believe these 3 points to be universal truths when it comes to floating.
Ditch the expectations
Recent pop culture examples have really missed the mark. You’re not going to be locked in, you’ve got heaps of room and light if you want it, and you can even leave the pod door open! You’re also probably not going to wildly hallucinate … only the lucky ones hallucinate! 😉
Relax the body – relax the mind
The first time people float it can be entertaining ping-ponging off the sides and trailing your hair through the water like a glamorous mermaid. But while you’re busy frolicking your mind will likely still be racing. Practice being still.
Don’t be so hard on yourself!
It’s perfectly natural for random thoughts to pop up while you’re floating. Let it go! Relax! Make friends with your monkey mind and it won’t bother you anymore. Focus on your breathing, and when you lose it that’s fine. Thoughts eventually drift by instead of consuming you. Just can’t seem to relax this time? That’s fine too. At the very minimum, you will at least absorb tons of that essential magnesium and leave feeling physically relaxed and blissed out.
At the end of the day there are no real rules for floating, but if you can get down with these principles, you are going feel AMAZING after. The number one lesson I have learnt from my float practice is that Meditation is not about changing ourselves, it’s about accepting ourselves. Remember that.
