Are Food Boxes (or Meal Kits) Good For You?

Your Health

It is now proven that we tend to cook at home less often than ever, and that we rely more and more on restaurants food delivery services and takeaways.

research conducted by the University of Sydney compared the nutritional value of a selection of meal kit services, concluding the meals are healthier than standard takeaway or restaurants delivery.

Even compared to homemade dinners, a food box will provide pre-portioned ingredients allowing a better portion-control of the meals, and in turn having a positive impact on the intake of vegetables, energy (kcal and kJ), fat and sodium.

And by cooking high-quality fresh produce, you know exactly what is in your plate.

The Environmental Impact

On the packaging aspect, your food boxes help you keep your carbon footprint to a minimum.

My Foodie Box has a system called Foodie Loop that ensures that none of the packaging is sent to landfill. The large box is collected when your new order is delivered. The liners, made of sheep wool, are composted at the end of their lifecycle. And everything inside the food box is either recyclable or compostable.

A 2019 study published in the journal Resources, Conservation and Recycling, finds that on average, a meal sourced at a grocery store generates 33% more greenhouse gas emissions than an equivalent meal delivered at home from a meal kit.

And with My Foodie Box being extra cautions about its environmental impact, the discrepancy is even higher. We provide you WA produce only, and with meats that are farmed responsibly.

Different studies1) show that by the time you order your 5th food delivery box with My Foodie Box, you will save 14kg of food from being wasted, and avoided 106kg of CO2 from being emitted – that is the equivalent of 582 km driven with a new car.

Are Meal Kits More Expensive?

These same studies reveal that Australians throw out $2.67 billions worth of fresh food every year. My Foodie Box provides fresh ingredients perfectly portioned to avoid waste. By the time you order your 5th food box with My Foodie Box, you will save $159 from waste.

Not to mention that doing grocery shopping in supermarkets will most likely result in purchases that are not on the shopping list, and that are not the healthiest options, like muffins, biscuits, pies, ice-cream, etc.

Convenience

A Research from AusVeg’s Project Harvest2) shows that the average Australian spends more than 58 hours in a supermarket each year! It is almost 8 days of your annual leave that are spent doing grocery shopping! Not to mention the time we spend to and from the supermarket.

Meal-planning is another challenge, especially for families or even time-poor couples with different diets. Between variety, different needs, fussy kids, and cooking what we know how to, we tend to always have the same home-made dinners.

My Foodie Box’s meal kits are full of fresh ingredients to cook delicious and varied meals: from the most exotic (easy-to-follow) recipes to Australian’s all-time favourite dishes, there is a bit for every taste.
